Kitchen Storage For The Soul

I despise Tupperware containers. And Rubbermaid. And any other plastic food storage container which requires me to not only find storage for them, but also keep the lids and bottoms together. I have yet to find a successful method for making them easy to use and so when I moved out of my last place, I got rid of it all. Every single piece of it. Dropping off a bag at Goodwill never felt so liberating.

I knew, however, that I would need to find a food storage solution as leftovers aren't going away any time soon, but decided to just wait it out. The right solution would present itself. And it did.

Hello, lover. Where have you been all my life??

Is it weird to be in love with small glass bowls? What if I told you they cost $1.95 each from Crate and Barrel? What if I told you they stack easily, wash easily and give my life purpose?

We use these to store just about everything. They are the perfect size for all of those little meal extras. I have them neatly and orderly stacked in a cupboard and they make it simple. I love simple.

The other storage solution we have embraced are these airtight, pop-locked containers from OXO. You can find them at Crate and Barrel and Macy's. Food stays super fresh and they are easy to stack and/or have side by side.

Dan is actually the one who found these and we have been hooked ever since. Our collection continues to grow as they come in every size and shape you can imagine. They are also dishwasher safe, aka - music to my ears.

To many it may seem like these are ridiculous items to get excited about, but it is all about the small things in life, isn't it? If any of you have these items, I would love to know what you think of them. Also, if you share in my loathing of tupperware-ish type containers, I would love to hear about that as well, because misery loves company, you know...

  2. I agree with you. My daughter and I have replaced all of our tupperware type storage for glass storage - as they are more environmentally friendly. When I was a kid we had glass containers with glass lids - I am really having trouble finding those, so if you run across them let me know. I bought some nice glass containers with plastic lids at World Market also! xxoo :)

  4. Headed to crate and barrle tomorrow! And I wish I could send a proper thank you for liberating the one cubby that I loathe opening the door to.

  7. I have not gotten rid of all my plastic containers, but it is my hope to do so. I did clean the cabinet out and that was awesome (who knew!?) The glass ones are beautiful. I must try to OXO ones.

  8. WOWIE! 1.95 each?! When I first started reading I thought, "Great, but I bet the solution is going to be so pricey", but no! They're affordable!

Great post! And wonderful blog, I'm so glad I found it!

  11. Love these! I got rid of all my plastic stuff too. I do keep those rubbermaid throw away things to send leftovers home with my kids, but that's all I use them for. I'll have to go to Crate and Barrel -- those are way cheaper than what I bought. Thanks for the tip!
